Notifications

Kuldron tells you when a channel you follow goes live, when someone replies to your post or your comment, when a message is waiting unread, when someone follows you or asks to be friends, and when someone subscribes to your channel or tips you. The bell in the navbar carries the unread count, and the list is at /me/notifications.

Every kind can be turned on or off on its own, and each says what it promises. A go-live is sent once per stream, and a reconnect during that stream does not send another. A busy thread is one notification rather than one per reply. A tip says who sent it, not how much. Individual channels can be muted.

Notifications can also reach a device that does not have Kuldron open. That is switched on per device. On an iPhone it works only once Kuldron has been added to the Home Screen, because notifications do not reach a browser tab there.

Do not disturb silences the alerts without stopping the notifications: they still collect in the list, and the badge still counts them.

Discussion

A post can carry images. The composer takes AVIF, PNG, JPEG and WebP, the first image is the cover, and reordering is how you choose which one that is. A post can be images alone, with no body text.

Feed rows carry a thumbnail and the number of images behind it. On the post page the set opens into a viewer that pages through it with the arrow keys.

A post that links somewhere shows a card with the linked page's title, description and site name. The card's picture follows your media setting: Automatic loads it, On demand holds it behind a button, and Off keeps the card and drops the picture. Nothing is fetched from the other site until the picture is shown. Plain addresses written into a post body are links.

Posting and commenting are open to every account, with no funding requirement.

Where the Post button is unavailable, the composer says what is missing.

Topics

Every topic on the map is named, inside its bubble where the name fits and just below it where it does not. Panning keeps the topics in view.

Messages

A conversation can hold more than two people. Pick several when composing, and the conversation is named for who is in it, can be renamed, and can be left. Who belongs to a conversation is fixed when it starts, so messaging a different set of people starts a different conversation rather than changing this one.

Messages take reactions, from the emoji set and from emotes you have access to.

If you have not chosen who may message you, anyone may: an account starts open, and a first message from someone who is not a friend arrives as a request you accept or decline. Someone who will not receive your message is refused when you pick them, rather than after you have written it, and anyone you message can reply to you whatever their own setting says.

On a phone, opening a conversation goes to the full page, with the composer on the bottom edge.

Availability and friends

From the account menu you can set yourself online, idle, do not disturb, or invisible, and set a status of an emoji and a few words. Invisible shows you as offline. Both appear on friend lists, on message surfaces, and on the card that opens from anyone's name.

Your media

/me/media lists the images you have uploaded and controls who can reach the original of each one. Other people are shown a copy Kuldron makes, with camera details such as location removed. The original stays private unless you say otherwise, and the choices are you alone, anyone who can see where you posted it, or nobody at all. That choice can be set per image and as an account default, and the default applies to what you upload next rather than to what is already there.

Removing an image takes it out of your library. Posts you have already published keep showing it, and the confirmation says so before you remove it.

Watching

The miniplayer resizes from any corner, holds its shape, and stays on screen when the window changes. Play, volume, live, quality and fullscreen remain reachable however small it gets, and the volume slider opens on a tap where there is no hover. Fullscreen from the miniplayer keeps its controls, and a button returns you to the full player.

Your account

You can change your password on the account page by entering your current one. Password fields carry a show and hide control that keeps your place in the field. On your list of registered devices, the one you are using is marked.

Privacy

The privacy page gathers your privacy settings in one place.

Getting around

Signed in, Kuldron opens on your feed. A New post button sits in the navbar, or press p, and the composer picks its own topic. g then t opens topics. Search separates people from channels, and can be narrowed to either.

Topics, blog posts and reference pages follow the content text size setting, and chat carries a text size of its own.

Touch and small screens

Holding a control names it, where a pointer would have to hover to read the same label, and tapping elsewhere dismisses the name. The navbar fits a 320 pixel phone. A left rail you opened closes itself when the screen narrows enough for it to become an overlay, and the topic chat rail sits on the bottom edge there.
